Remember back in April, when crumb-bum Don Young had a massive cash-on-hand of nearly $2 million? Surely such a hefty sum would be more than enough to bury his eventual Democratic opponent in November 2008, right?
Here’s the only catch: Young’s been hemorrhaging so much cash, that he’ll be lucky to have any of it left in his bank account this fall. Check out his latest FEC filing:
Raised: $43,850.00
Spent: $590,603.33
CoH: $948,228.05
Hoo-ah! That’s a whole lot of expenditures! That figure includes $74,811.96 paid to the DC law firm Tobin, O’Connor, Ewing & Richard, and a whopping $330,619.46 paid to Akin Gump, another DC firm, for various legal services.
May the lawyers continue to bleed Young’s campaign white as the King of the Crumb-Bums continues to scramble to save his own hide.
With nearly all the 4th quarter numbers in, Democrats have nearly twice as many incumbents with $1 million or more in the bank than Republicans. Overall, 48 Democrats have at least $1 million including 8 at $2 million or over. Only 25 Republicans top $1 million with just 3 over $2 million.
Btw, two of the Republican million dollar men are retiring (Saxton of NJ and Tom Davis of VA. Two of the Democrats $2 million dollar men are running for the Senate: Mark Udall in CO and Tom Allen in Maine.
Any kind of campaign bleeds these characters dry. David Dreier had over $3 million last cycle and now languishes at just under $2 million. Look for Mary Bono rather than Connie Mack to retire. She’s got barely half the cash on hand of her new husband ($219,111 to $401,656). And it is a more competitive district. If not this cycle, then next.
Bar the usage of campaign funds for paying lawyers to manage your defense for things you do in Congress.
Young needs to raise a lot more money. They will bleed him white.
